What this is

Guidance for the returning parent and the caregiver on rebuilding shared parenting gradually rather than all at once.

Why it matters

Both adults usually feel they have earned authority. Children pay for that conflict unless it is worked out deliberately and slowly.

What you should know

  • Start with a limited, agreed role and expand it on a schedule you both set.
  • Rules that already exist in the household should generally hold for the first stretch.
  • Children may test both adults; treat it as adjustment, not disloyalty.
  • Schedule an adults-only check-in weekly for the first two months.
  • Never renegotiate authority in front of the child.
  • If a legal order governs contact or custody, follow it and seek legal guidance to change it.

Talk about it

Each adult names one thing they need from the other in the first month.

Your next step

Write the parenting role for weeks one through four before release.
