What this is

A sequencing guide for the first month after release, covering supervision requirements, documents, income, and the household adjustment.

Why it matters

The first month sets the trajectory. Families that have sequenced it in advance spend that month building rather than reacting.

What you should know

  • Supervision requirements — reporting, curfews, travel limits — come first and shape everything else.
  • Identification documents are usually needed before employment, housing, or benefits.
  • Have one written list of appointments in a place the whole household can see.
  • Reentry organizations often assist with documents, clothing, transportation, and job placement.
  • Expect the household routine to be disrupted even when everyone wanted this.
  • Agree in advance on how parenting decisions will be re-shared, rather than assuming.

Talk about it

Ask each adult: what is the one thing you are most worried about in month one?

Your next step

Write the first-week appointment list before the release date.
