Guides & Toolkits

The Caregiver’s Safe Harbor Collection

A toolkit guide and a workbook, built for the caregiver who suddenly became the whole plan. Written from lived experience by a family that navigated nearly a decade of parental incarceration — and paired with the workshops, training, and consulting that make the material stick.

Why this exists

Caregivers are handed the responsibility and almost none of the information.

When a parent is incarcerated, someone else becomes the steady thing in a child’s life — usually overnight, usually without a guide, and usually while grieving too. Institutions give that caregiver forms. They rarely give them language, a plan, or permission to need support.

The Safe Harbor Collection is our answer to that. It is not a workbook of theory. It is the set of conversations, scripts, checklists, and plans we wish someone had handed our own family on day one.

MFGP is a nonprofit, and this collection funds our programs. Pricing is deliberately low, every tier funds free access for someone else, and no caregiver is turned away for cost — write to donate@MyFairyGodparents.org and we will get you a copy.

For caregivers

Grandparents, aunties, kinship caregivers, foster and adoptive parents, and the parent left at home.

For professionals

Counselors, case managers, teachers, and reentry staff working directly with families.

For programs

Youth programs and congregations that need something concrete to put in a caregiver's hands.

For funders

A tangible, low-cost intervention you can underwrite for an entire community.

What’s inside the two components

Component one — read and learn

The Safe Harbor Toolkit guide

  • What children actually understand about incarceration at different ages
  • Language that tells the truth without frightening a child
  • School, healthcare, and benefits conversations caregivers get pulled into
  • Visits, calls, and mail: preparing a child, and protecting yourself
  • Caregiver burnout, grief, and the support you are allowed to ask for

Component two — use and work through

Workbook & Action Guide

  • Reflection prompts you can answer in ten minutes
  • A family communication plan you can actually fill in
  • Scripts for school staff, relatives, and hard questions from kids
  • Visit and call preparation checklists
  • A caregiver support map: who is on your side, and what you still need

Pre-order the collection

This isn’t just a book set

The collection is the entry point. The support around it is the program.

MFGP built these materials to accompany live work with caregivers, staff, and youth. Most organizations pair the collection with a workshop or a few consulting hours so the plans in the workbook actually get made.

Bulk & institutional distribution

Schools, reentry programs, courts, clinics, conferences, and funders regularly need copies for an entire cohort. Tell us the setting and the number of families you serve, and we will scope it with you — including sponsored distribution where a funder covers the caregivers’ copies.

Institutional pricing for printed copies is set once production costs are final. Digital licensing is available today.
