What this is

An orientation to the public locator systems families use to find where someone is held, including the federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator.

Why it matters

Families lose days to phone trees in the first week. Knowing which system to search — federal, state, or county — shortens that considerably.

What you should know

  • Federal, state, and county systems are separate; searching the wrong one returns nothing.
  • The federal Bureau of Prisons publishes an online inmate locator.
  • Most states run their own department-of-corrections locator; county jails often have separate rosters.
  • Records may lag by a day or more, especially right after a transfer.
  • Have the full legal name and date of birth ready.
  • Facility rules for calls, mail, and visits are set by that facility, not by the locator.

Your next step

Identify whether the facility is federal, state, or county before searching further.

The information provided through The #FKLM Family Blueprint is for general educational purposes and is not legal advice. Laws and policies differ by jurisdiction and may change. Families needing advice about their individual circumstances should consult an appropriately qualified attorney or legal-services organization.
