What this is
Information about the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, a free national service available by call or text at any hour. The linked federal page explains how to reach 988 and what other crisis help exists.
Why it matters
Caregivers routinely reach the end of their capacity and assume there is nowhere to turn until things are catastrophic. A crisis line is also for the stage before that.
What you should know
- 988 is available by phone and text across the United States, at no cost.
- You do not have to be suicidal to call; emotional distress and being overwhelmed are valid reasons.
- You can call about someone else you are worried about.
- Interpretation services and specialized lines are available.
- If there is immediate physical danger, 911 remains the emergency number.
- Save the number in your phone now, before you need it.
Your next step
Add 988 to your phone contacts today.
