MFGP would like to extend condolences to the loved ones of Talib Shakir, as well as, highlight his life and legacy. As a polyglot, skier, marathon-runner, and Director of the D.C. Mayor’s Office on Returning Citizen Affairs (MORCA), Shakir pursued opportunities to optimize his second chance and to help others do the same. Through programs such as Georgetown University’s Pivot Program, a highly selective program for D.C. residents that were previously incarcerated within the last five years of their application, Shakir gained academic skills for the business field, as well as, hands-on experience. As director of MORCA, Shakir worked to “remove barriers to reentry…and…empowered residents to break the cycle of recidivism…by connecting previously incarcerated people to essential programs and services (e.g. employment, health, education, housing assistance, and social services)” (Mayor’s Office on Returning Citizen Affairs, n.d.).
Talib Shakir tragically lost his life in a scooter-collision in D.C. on Friday, October 10 (WUSA9, 2026). Shakir’s story has transformed the lives of many. May his memory be a blessing.
